Prompts For People Who Dislike Structure

These prompts were created for #Journalshare, a free weekly journaling event for creative women.  Feel free to join in the fun.  I’ve kept a journal on and off for about 30 years. I’ve tried just about every method, all sorts of prompts, guided journal systems, and all points in between.

I tend to lose interest in prompt sets and guided journals because I find the questions and prompts too specific to the experiences of the author (or the experience that the author is hoping to provoke for the reader/participant.)

As a writer and artist, I find the best prompts for intropsective writing are the ones that are left open to interpretation, that don’t dictate a certain subject or style.

I’ve put this list together for folks who want a bit of direction but also want the freedom to interpret or reinterpret the same prompts however they like.

How to Use These Prompts.

You can answer some of these in a direct manner. For example:

You could respond to “Who are you?” with a short autobiography.

You could also write a scene or vignette from the point of view of a character who is asking that question: “Who are you?”

Some of them, such as “What happened?” are more intentionally vague.

Tell me what happened–the first thing that comes to your mind–or compose a short story or a piece of art about a life-changing event, or something else entirely.

The beauty of these prompts is in their versatility.

  • Who are you?
  • Who were you?
  • Who do you want to be?
